Studio

Founded by MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, Studio Gang is an architecture and urban design practice with offices in Chicago and New York.

We work as a collective of more than 90 architects, designers, and planners.

We collaborate closely with our clients, expert consultants, and specialists from a range of fields to design and realize innovative projects at multiple scales: architecture, urbanism, interiors, and exhibitions.

We use design as a medium to connect people socially, experientially, and intellectually.

As the City of Chicago works to transform the long-polluted and neglected Chicago River into its next recreational frontier, Studio Gang’s WMS Boathouse at Clark Park helps catalyze necessary momentum. By creating a key public access point along the river’s edge, it supports the larger movement toward the river’s ecological and recreational revival.

The design of Starlight Theatre maintains the tradition of open-air performances at Rock Valley College while offering new flexibility and comfort, allowing the company to extend its season and guarantee performances. Beneath the roof, the central theater space forms an unexpected vertical axis to the sky that enhances the audience’s delight at being outdoors. With its new building and expanded programming possibilities, Starlight has become a regional destination and favorite summer venue for the community.

City Hyde Park reimagines the urban apartment building, bringing new options for living, recreation, and leisure to its full-block site—formerly a strip mall and under-used parking lot. Located at a busy commercial intersection near Lake Michigan and adjacent to a commuter rail stop, it is designed as a pedestrian-friendly hub that has a positive impact on its neighborhood.

The Nature Boardwalk transforms a picturesque yet unsustainable urban pond from the 19th century into an ecological habitat buzzing with life. With the design’s improvements to water quality, hydrology, landscape, accessibility, and shelter, the site is able to function as an outdoor classroom that demonstrates the coexistence of nature and city.

Immersing museum visitors in the creative process, Building: Inside Studio Gang Architects, the Studio’s first solo exhibition, embodied the energy and ideas that connect our growing body of work.

Polis Station seeks to contribute to the national dialogue on policing reform by exploring how design can help people imagine changes in police-community relations. By taking a close look at the police station—the architectural space of policing—the project offers ideas that can help transform urban police stations into neighborhood investments that ultimately strengthen their communities in return.

Studio Gang at Camp Wandawega

Every year the whole Studio heads out to Elkhorn, Wisconsin's Camp Wandawega to enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, bonfires, and camaraderie. A Studio Gang tradition since 2012, our annual retreat features special guests who lead us in activities ranging from foraging to drum-making to star-gazing.

This video from Spirit of Space captures our 2015 retreat at Camp Wandawega.

Bike to Work Week at Studio Gang

Riding more than 1,200 miles over the course of a week, Studio Gang held on to our first place title during Active Transportation Alliance’s 2016 Bike to Work Week. The Studio has received first place in its category since 2011.

Model Shop Chicago, 2016

The shop is the heart of the Studio—a hands-on space where each of us is encouraged to build, investigate, and explore. The shop touches each project at every phase, using models as tools to push and elevate our designs. We are trained to use the shop’s digital tools but are also encouraged to use our hands whenever possible. The shop allows us to investigate the formal, spatial, and material qualities of our projects both individually and collectively and is a lively communal space that supports creativity and innovation.

Publications

Reveal, the Studio’s first volume on its work and process, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2011. Also in 2011, in collaboration with the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Studio published Reverse Effect: Renewing Chicago’s Waterways, exploring a radically greener future for the Chicago River and the Great Lakes. A solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012 was accompanied by the catalogue Building: Inside Studio Gang, distributed by Yale University Press.
