A partner program of the 2025 Chicago Architecture Biennial, this exhibition delves into the design of Populus, Studio Gang’s recent hotel project in downtown Denver that opened in 2024.

Revealing Populus’ architecture, interiors, and landscape, the show examines the larger question of how 21st-century hotels can create desirable destinations for travelers while also contributing to positive social and environmental change.

A 6-foot-tall sectional model of the hotel’s southeast corner, originally built for the Denver Art Museum’s 2024 exhibition Biophilia: Nature Reimagined, is a focal point of the exhibition.

Through architectural models, drawings, material samples, and more, visitors can discover the intention and process behind the project.

The building’s signature “aspen eye” windows frame a look into how contemporary hotels can connect more closely with their local community and ecology—while simultaneously transforming Studio Gang’s Chicago gallery into a glimpse of Colorado, inside and out.

Many of the project’s recycled, repurposed, and innovative interior materials are on display, including the Reishi “mushroom leather” used in the hotel’s ground-floor bar.
