Located on the garden level of Studio Gang’s Chicago office, the Visible Archive is a new space dedicated to the conservation and display of the Studio’s diverse collection of design records, which represents over 25 years of making architecture.

Organized by project and format, and managed according to museum standards, the collection includes:

• Physical models from all design phases
• Jeanne Gang’s sketchbooks
• Jeanne Gang’s hand drawings, sketches, and collages
• Architectural drawing sets
• Digital models, drawings, animations, and other files
• Mock-ups, installations, and building fragments and materials
• Press clippings and publications
• Project research dossiers

The Archive is designed to be a resource for the Studio as well as visiting guests and researchers, who can make appointments to tour the space and view specific projects and materials. Open shelving holds physical models and works on paper, with freestanding, large-scale objects located throughout. Curated displays highlight the Studio’s working process, especially its unique approach to physical modelmaking, and tease out the intellectual interests that connect the projects across time. A work space for model conservation and a Reading Room area for study and conversation help activate the collection as a living resource, sparking new ideas and design exploration.

Historic windows and full-height glazing bring natural light and transparency to the space, making the Studio’s collections visible from both the street and the adjacent Gallery.

Beyond the Visible Archive, Studio Gang’s work is also found in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the National Museum of 21st-century Art (MAXXI) in Rome, the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
