Managing Partner Mark Schendel has been named an AIA Fellow in Practice (Management). This classification is given to architects who “advanced the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice.”
In his 23 years as Managing Principal of Studio Gang, Mark has led the management of 280 projects of diverse client, budget, and project types. Notable for their diversity, award-winning design, and quality of construction, these projects have made a wide-ranging positive impact on their users, communities, and the industry at large. His management model—based in design excellence, mentorship, and greater equity—has implemented an ambitious vision for architectural practice that pursues design creativity and quality alongside social good. He has managed the firm’s growth from four to more than 120 team members across five offices and two countries, and acted as a tireless champion of research, experimentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His innovative cost management methodology has also been adopted by clients, engineers, contractors, and other architects.
Through unusually deep engagement with engineers and other architects, Mark has often turned professional collaborations into a kind of co-mentoring process that enriches individuals and design. He led a well-publicized pay equity initiative and he guides the Studio’s membership in AIA Chicago’s Equity Task Force and the pilot study of the AIA Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Self-Assessment tool. As a member of the University of Kentucky School of Architecture’s Advisory Board, he serves on its Diversity/Equity and Recruitment Subcommittee, bridging practice and education to strengthen best practices in both realms.
Thank you to AIA Chicago for endorsing his nomination!
