Jeanne Gang Awarded 2020 Global Citizen Award

“World Business Chicago, Chicago Sister Cities International and the Chicago Consular Corps are thrilled to announce Jeanne Gang as the recipient of the 2020 Chicago Consular Corps Gala Global Citizen Award. Gang is an architect, FAIA and Founding Principal and Partner of Studio Gang, an architecture and urban design practice headquartered in Chicago with offices in New York, San Francisco and Paris.

Gang’s extraordinary contributions to architecture and urban design, have distinguished her as a leading architect of her generation. Gang has contributed to projects ranging from cultural centers that convene diverse audiences, to installations that challenge material properties and high-rise towers that foster community. For example, Gang’s 82-story, Aqua Tower in Chicago is currently the tallest woman-designed building in the world, a distinction soon to be passed to the new Vista Tower, also of Gang’s design. In March 2019, Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that Jeanne Gang and her team were selected as the winner of an international design competition for the new $2.2 billion Global Terminal at O’Hare International Airport. Additionally, in 2019, Gang was the only architect named to TIME Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Gang and the Studio also develop exhibitions that push design’s ability to create public awareness and give rise to change. The Studio has championed innovative design strategies to improve ecological biodiversity in cities, including bird-safe building techniques and an experimental prairie ecosystem on the rooftop of their Chicago office.

Gang has championed gender equality and fought for diversity in the architectural and engineering fields. In 2018, she closed the gender pay gap at her firm and called on other architecture and design firms to do the same. At the most recent International Venice Architecture Biennale, Gang stood with other women architects and allies in a flash mob to denounce discrimination and prejudice within her field. It is through the vision and action of people like Jeanne Gang – a civic-minded business leader – that Chicago is able to grow its status as an internationally renowned city.

Join us on Friday, November 6, 2020 at the 2020 Chicago Consular Corps Gala as we celebrate Chicago’s diplomatic community and shine a bright spotlight on the outstanding accomplishments of Jeanne Gang.”
