Studio Gang to Exhibit Terracotta Research and Prototype at Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop

As part of the fifth annual Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW), Studio Gang will present research on the materiality, large-scale production, and assembly of architectural terracotta. Combining research into historic terracotta assemblies with new fabrication techniques, Studio Gang collaborated with architectural ceramic manufacturing experts Boston Valley Terra Cotta, students from the University of Buffalo School of Architecture, and structural consultants from Walter P. Moore to design and fabricate an assembly prototype that demonstrates the architectural possibilities of large-scale, structural terracotta elements for high-performance buildings.

Now in its fifth year, ACAW aims to bring together manufacturers, designers, and facade engineers to further the industry’s understanding of the architectural applications of ceramics. This year, Studio Gang was one of nine invited offices, including Handel Architects, Perkins and Will, PLP Architects, KPF, LMN, Pelli Clark Pelli/Studios, Smith and Gill, and SOM.

Following the exhibition opening, the Studio Gang design team will present their project as part of a live virtual webinar alongside representatives from LMN, KPF, and moderator Omar Khan, Professor and Head of the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University and co-organizer of the ACAW.
