Issue 53 of the Harvard Design Magazine, guest edited by Jeanne Gang and Harvard urban historian Lizabeth Cohen, examines reuse and repair at multiple scales—from individual buildings to downtown streets and the regulatory frameworks that organize our cities.
The issue brings together contributors from a range of fields—disability studies, sociology, architecture history and theory, public health, among many others—to highlight creative and interdisciplinary thinking. Through essays, interviews, and photo-essays, the issue asks the question: If architects can see beyond the allure of new construction, what kinds of climate-conscious buildings, healthy cities, and collective ways of living might they create?
The issue also includes a series of conversations led by Jeanne with deans, academics, regulators, and education advocates about how reuse is being taught in US architecture schools.
