With its port city at an important post-industrial crossroads, the government of Kaohsiung hosted a global competition to rejuvenate a key former industrial site with live music venues and a maritime museum.

Studio Gang’s design engages the city’s infrastructure and urban waterfront, weaving together architecture and landscape to infuse a vibrant energy throughout the building and to the harbor beyond.

The performance venues, uniquely shaped by the acoustical conditions of the site, direct noise out to the vast harbor, away from nearby residences. Together, the architecture and landscape prioritize access to the harbor for people—rather than industry.

Reshaped and reclaimed, the new waterscape has multiple environmental benefits, becoming an estuarine link along Kaohsiung’s developing network of flood storage and water-quality improvement parks.
