‘An internationally acclaimed artist is creating artwork for Tom Lee Park that will ask visitors a profound question:
Can you put the welfare of others ahead of yourself, like the great Tom Lee did in 1925 when the African American river worker risked his life to pull 32 people from the Mississippi?
The answers, artist Theaster Gates told The Daily Memphian, may reveal if Memphis will level the playing field for all its citizens, will improve housing and schools for the poor, and will infuse the community with more kindness and generosity.
“My hope is that everyday people, but also politicians, principals, venture capitalists, would come to the site and want to ask themselves, ‘How can I do more?’” Gates said.’
