In this Op-Ed for the New York Times, Jeanne Gang and Greg Lindsay address issues at the core of the United States’ housing crisis that have been wholly ignored: design and urban planning.
Gang and Lindsay argue that solving the crisis requires a multidisciplinary approach combining new design, new paths to homeownership, and new zoning. They offer a case study of Cicero, Illinois, a Chicago suburb that Gang and Lindsay studied as part of the exhibition Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream at the Museum of Modern Art.
They propose reclaiming and remediating existing, underused properties, resulting in a new, thriving living-working model of housing, ideas that are further explored in the Studio’s project Garden in the Machine, developed with a team of experts in fields ranging from ecology to finance.
