‘For those dreaming of a new riverfront experience, that fantasy is one step closer to reality.
Final schematic designs for Tom Lee Park renovations, drawn up by architecture firm Studio Gang and landscape architecture firm SCAPE, were revealed in a virtual public meeting Thursday afternoon. The new designs were released in May after negotiations between the Memphis River Parks Partnership and Memphis in May.
Work is expected to begin before the end of the year with a final buildout completed in early 2023.
George Abbott, a spokesperson for the partnership, said the improvements would give the mighty Mississippi the riverfront it deserved.
“We’re lucky here in Memphis that we sit on the widest and the wildest part of the Mississippi River,” he said. “It’s an asset for us. We’re lucky to be here.”’
“We’re creating something that’s worthy of a 200-year-old city growing to embrace inclusivity, ambition, equality and change.
Tom Lee did a noble deed. Let’s do another one by giving generations of Memphians a world-class riverfront park that can enrich them every single day.”
Tom Lee Park Engagement Center opens at Beale Street Landing to share Studio Gang design with Memphians.
“Along six miles of the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee, Studio Gang and SCAPE have designed Tom Lee Park with architectural interventions, multi-purpose spaces, landscape, and playplaces.”
