Architectural Digest — “Jeanne Gang and Nick Cave Design a Flexible Performance Space in Chicago”

“Kicking off the Chicago Architecture Biennial and EXPO Chicago over the past weekend, Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang created a flexible environment of more than 200 reflective silver Stage Buoys to define and interact with Cave’s performances. Tottering on a curved weighted base, the buoys are moveable objects themselves, danced with, around, or static.

The collaboration began when Cave approached Gang with a design challenge: ‘how best to architecturally create a magical space’ on the Navy Pier, he recalled. Cave would host three different performances here, including the debut of a new work ‘Up Right Chicago,’ so a flexible design was crucial. ‘Creating the environment is part of the work itself,’ he says, and that environment had to reflect the intense energy found in Cave’s work.”
