Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership for FREESPACE

As outlined in the FREESPACE manifesto, the curators selected projects for the exhibition that possess “a generosity of spirit” and give unexpected moments to the public realm. Encountering the exhibit allows visitors to discover for themselves how the Arcus Center takes its place among these works of generous architecture.

Three curving walls built of wood masonry, a vernacular, low-carbon construction technique used for the Center’s exterior, provide an up-close look at the rich materiality of this method and the striking moments it offers the public. The walls’ arcing geometry sets welcoming spatial conditions vital to the Arcus Center’s mission—embracing those entering and creating a sense of openness and connection. They also create a warm, conversationally focused space at the center of the building that can be freely appropriated.

In Venice, it is hoped the gently arcing walls create a special space of pause and encounter within the busy Arsenale, where visitors can learn more about the building through a video and model or simply relax and enjoy the space around them.
