Digital technology has both radically expanded the audience for pop music and threatened the economic viability of its industry. The Taipei Pop Music Center challenges this notion by making real, live experience more exciting and enduring than its virtual counterpart.
Two primary venues define the architecture: the open-air Oculus, accommodating 13,000 fans beneath the open sky, and the indoor Main Hall, with occupancy for 5,600 fans in a range of configurations. Leading to the Main Hall, the Famous Steps, featuring an amphitheater-like topography, creates opportunities for spontaneous performances and social gatherings.
Additional amenities, including restaurants, retail kiosks, and recording booths, are connected by the Public Loop, culminating at the Hall of Fame on the building’s third and highest floor. The building’s compact design preserves the majority of the site for use as an urban park, serving the many outdoor music festivals of Taipei while introducing crucial green infrastructure to the rapidly developing neighborhood of Nangang.
