Structural Engineer Peter Heppel is the Technology Fellow in Studio Gang’s Chicago office. A longtime collaborator of the Studio, Peter specializes in lightweight structures and aerodynamics. Drawing on decades of his unique experience applying his expertise of structural design and wind engineering across disciplines including architecture, large-scale art installations, aircrafts, and advanced sailing technologies; Peter will act as a bridge between architectural design and structural solutions at all project phases—from conceptual design to construction administration.
In partnership with the design team’s architectural and material decisions, Peter has developed new structural systems for a wide range of Studio projects including the “cat’s paw” at Writers Theatre, the mobile roof at Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre, the Marble Curtain exhibition, and the crenellated façade of the Tour Montparnasse. Able to approach structural design from an architect’s perspective, he is currently leading engineering research, collaboration, and iterative experimentation using both digital and analog technologies for the O’Hare Global Terminal.
Prior to joining Studio Gang, Peter designed many innovative structures; including the lightweight Glasgow Science Centre; and was the design leader for NASA's Advanced Inflatable Airlock System. Peter has been a visiting professor at the Vienna University of Technology, Stanford University, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Peter has dedicated much of his career to research and technological advancements in the structural mechanics of high-performance yacht sails, having taken part in the America's Cup competition since 1982.
Peter has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering for the University of Bristol in the UK. Outside the office, Peter enjoys spending time with the sea, his cat, and practicing mathematics.
